‘Power Surge On Hub Port’ with Digital Camera I’ve been using for years?

I’ve been using this camera for quite a while now, and I connected it a few days ago and got this error message:

“A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.”

Clicking the message doesn’t help at all.

Any Ideas?? I’ve tried different batteries with no change. I don’t use any special software to upload them, I just open the folder and drag&drop onto my desktop.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  1. Brian F Says:

Every USB device you hook up to a USB hub (be it internal, (built into the motherboard/computer) or an external one you use to add more ports), consumes a certain amount of power from the ports. It doesn’t matter that the camera has it’s own power, it will still draw some power from the hub.

If you have other devices plugged into the USB ports, remove 1 or 2 of them and try the camera again.

If you are using an external hub, it’s possible it or it’s power supply has gone bad.

Do you have other USB ports on the same computer that you can try? Sometimes manufacturers put different standards of port in different places (better ones at the back).

Is there another USB device now attached? Does the system think there is? On the taskbar is there a “Safely Remove Hardware” icon that shows a phantom item?

Are you using an external USB hub? What happens if you connect directly?

Has the USB cable become dirty or broken? A short in the cable can cause it to draw more current than the USB specification allows.

Can you try starting up the computer with the camera attached? Maybe the sudden draw confused the computer.

Does your camera still show up? Sometimes you can just ignore (or disable) the warnings and go on with your life.
