What do I need to connect two DSL lines?

I have an older computer in the house and would like to connect it to our DSL. It, of course, does not have an ethernet plugin on the back but it does have USB. I already have a USB cord that goes with my router, but it is too short to go into the other room. Is there a way to connect just an ethernet cable, then maybe using a coupler, connect the USB cable into it and into the computer. Would this work? If so, what kind of coupler would I need? Would this be fine:

If not could you please tell me what I could do?

Problem with connecting DSL modem via USB?

Hi,
I have just bought a new DSL modem and I tried to connect it to my PC via USB (my PC doesn’t have ethernet port).
For the first two times, setup of modem (from CD accompanying modem) work properly but due to some problems I could not establish my connection.

Now, when I try again to install it, the computer doesn’t recognize when I plug-in the USB into its place and so the setup doesn’t go further… the only change which happens now when I connect modem via USB cabel is below message that is appeared in my device manager:
” TI USB Remote NDIS Network Device #6 ”
when I see the properties of this, it is written:
” The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver. ”

but when I try to reinstall, finally this message is showed:
“there was a problem installing this hardaware,
a service installation section in this INF is invalid”

?? I do according to what I did before(and it worked) and I don’t know what has happened that setup doesn’t work properly anymore!!
What should I do?
My modem/Router is Shiro DSL805EU
I suppose it is a router ( I my self don’t know the difference between router and modem!).
the operating system I use is Windows XP

I had already removed router and turned it off. and also I uninstalled device and then tried to reinstall it but it doesn’t work

USB stick vs external hard drive for storage?

I want to store ALL my files (documents, music, video:everything) somewhere externally but are USB sticks a viable means of storing all my data? Or should I invest in an external hard drive? The thing is I only really need about 16GB and external hard drives come in much bigger capacities and cost more. Are there any advantages for using one over the other (besides portability + capacity)?
There is a maximum number of times you can write to a USB stick right? Or is that a non-issue? Which lasts longer and is more durable?
