Broken external hard-drive question?

Dropped my external hard-drive earlier. I tried to insert the usb cable into my laptop but i get an error message saying ‘power surge on hub port’ and the port is temporarily disabled, meaning i cant access the hard drive.

The usb cable I would normally use to connect the HDD to my laptop is now loose when inserted into the HDD, it comes out very easily, rather than a snug fit.

There is no clicking noise inside my hard drive, and it turns out like normal. I think the problem may be entirely linked to this USB issue, could the USB power surge message also be caused by the problem with this connector?

Basicially Im wondering what the likihood is of the HDD data itself being, OK, just the case is damaged - do you think its a matter of taking it to a PC repair shop and having them put the HDD part into a new case?

open the device manager (start menu -> run -> devmgmt.msc). Now, expand the USB group at the bottom of the list and double-click any “Universal Host Controller”. Click the “Advanced”-tab, and check the “Don’t tell me about USB problems” option at the bottom. Click OK and close the device manager.
