USB flash drive trouble?

So i recently bought a laptop and an 8gb usb drive, mostly to move my music. I managed to move everything just fine.
Yesterday i bought an hp printer and tried install the software in my desktop but i would get an error message. It said something similar to “invalid directory f :\”. I remembered my usb was drive f :\ by default. So i put my usb in the computer and installed the software with no problems. Then later i was trying to uninstall nero 8 and i got the same error message.
Also i remember one time i had to restart that computer and i left the flash drive in. When it booted it said something about error with drive f:\ , So i know that must have something to do with it. How can i fix this so i dont need my usb drive to install or uninstall software?
