Windows Vista + Mass Storage = Nuclear Holocaust?

What can I do to make my Vista Basic OS recognize mass storage? A couple months ago it wouldn’t recognize my external harddrive (older unit circa 2001 or so - has drivers for Windows 2000 but Vista won’t take it) and now it won’t recognize my digital photo frame (Viewsonic DPX 704WH - brand new). Viewsonic’s website even says it works with Vista and it doesn’t even have drivers. Same problem with both mass storage devices - it pops up and says it has an unknown USB device and it wants to install drivers. Both times driver installation fails (with the photo frame I only tried that as a second resort because the photo frame HAS no drivers and says my computer should automatically recognize it) and it doesn’t show a drive for it in my My Computer. I can see it as an “Unknown Device” in my Device Manager. Please help!
Have rebooted several times, doesn’t change the unknown device. Also tried “Disable” on Device Manager. Just popped back up when I reconnected it.

Go to device manager and delete unknown device. Reboot (just to play safe). Once you are back up try reconnecting. It may just have been a bad connection. With the external hard drive, make sure that it is turned on and spinning before attaching it to the USB port.
