What to do if system not recognize your USB drive?

I have a external hard drive. When plug into my destop a popup said it is not recognized. i try on my friends laptop also gets the same result. I’m using Window XP SP2 and my friend uses Window Vista Home Basic. How to fix this problem?

how can i convert my external hard drive into a network hard drive?

I have a usb external hard drive. I want it to be part of my network. I do not want to share the hard drive through a computer. I want it to be stand alone. How can i connect it to my router? I have seen ethernet adapter how they are intended to convert ethernet to usb. Will it work backwards?
I DO NOT WANT TO SHARE IT THROUGH THE COMPUTER!!!

My little brother is turning 15 next week and asked for an external hard drive for gaming and stuff. Can you recommend one that is good for gaming and won’t empty my wallet?

External Hard Drive Not Recognized by XP?

Hi, I have an external hard drive that was working fine before and last week it stopped being recognized. When I connect it to my laptop, XP would detect it but I can’t see it in My Computer. I can’t reformat it since it’s not showing in Disk Management. I think the power cable is ok since the light is on. I changed the USB data cable, connected it to a different computer but no luck. What else can I do here? Can I even retrieve my files from that drive? or am I doomed? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

My PC wont recongnise my External Hard Drive?

I got a 10GB external USB hard drive for my laptop. So when I plugged it in to the USB port it installed the drivers were install and all of that but when I looked on My Computer I couldn’t find it so I looked on Device manager and the hard drive was there but not on My Computer and I couldn’t acces it from any where, so I tried it on my desktop PC and the same thing happened. What should I do?

Can i use my 2 tb western digital external hard drive via usb only?

I like the feature that allows us to use this hard drive and share within a network but im a college student and my dorm doesnt have ethernet or a router. we have wi-fi. Is it possible to use this hard drive only by usb for the time being? or does it have to be plugged up to a network directly?

A couple of weeks ago I unplugged the usb connecting the computer and the 2.5 wd passprt external hard drive without going to “safely remove usb”. Now It won’t light up. What can i do to get the files from it? Is there a way to make it turn on? Can i slave it into a pc or something? I’ve unplugged the drive without going through the “safely remove” process many times before. Why does it break now???

Are there any good/reliable external hard drives that are powered by USB selling for less than $100?

I’ve seen some deals but they’re usually refurbished or AC adapter-powered(outlet/plug into the wall). So would I only be able to find one that usually sells for less than $100 w/o it being on sale or anything?
Also, when looking to buy one, are external hard drives that don’t have fans bad and overheat?
forgot to mention that i’m looking for a 500GB external hard drive
