Trying to fix up a Gateway computer?

I have a gateway computer that i’ve been trying to fix up - whenever I try to install Windows XP/2000/Ubuntu, it finds a bunch of errors.
I’d really like to get this computer working, it has a 300GB HD, TV inputs, USB ports out the wazoo, and all that other good stuff.
Can someone help me with what to do.. or have a suggestion on what to replace? Any help is appreciated.

I have formatted the hard drive (the Windows installation did it.)

The windows installation is to the point where its copying the installation files to the disk, then it gives me an error that it can’t find/can’t copy the file.

The Linux installation just gives me cryptic errors before it even does anything.

Anything else? ask.
I just want to get it to a point where it’s usable… I really don’t care what operating system.

What’s the best way to get data out of an old pentium 1 computer?

I got it around 8 years ago. I probably have a few folders I might want to keep. Is there a quick way of downloading the files I want into an external drive? What kind of connection can I use? My current external drive has an USB port. I don’t think they had that back then. Also, do I need to get a software to wipe off the hard drive if I want to donate it? Or could I just reformat it with the recovery disk? Thanks.

Putting linux on an old laptop (no cd)?

OK, so i’ve wanted to “play around” with linux for some time, and i want to put either fedora or ubuntu on my old “hp omnibook xe3″, except the cd drive is broken, and wont read any of the discs (actually it worked once but the instillation stalled, probably another cd drive failure). Anyways, my friend and i cracked it open today, and couldn’t connect the hard drive to my desktop, so that’s a no-go too. What are my other options? Using a windows vista, windows xp, or ubuntu desktop (my friends obviously) could i boot the old thing from the network (and how)? Floppy drive booting? P.S. the bios don’t support usb booting either, tried that ;) . Thanks to anyone who answers!

How do I access the files on my computer when windows xp cannot start up?

My computer has a possibly virus related issue that makes it unable to boot up - after I log in, it lasts for a few seconds then automatically resets itself. I have been advised to format my hard drive and re-install windows xp, but is there a method which I can back-up my files by? I have heard technicians talking about a CD which can be inserted into the drive and acts as a pre-startup disk which allows the files to be accessed and copied to a USB drive.

Please help!

Cheers

Where can I get drivers for my Acer Extensa 4420 laptop with Windows XP?

So here’s the deal… it came installed with Windows Vista. I took out that hard drive, put a new 500 G one in, and put Windows XP Home Edition on it. I am missing drivers for these things (as stated in Device Manager):
“Ethernet Controller”
“Mass Storage Controller”
“Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus”
“Network Controller”
“SM Bus Controller”

I have contacted both Acer and Windows technical support. They’re pretty much useless to me.
Sorry, I’ve been to both of those websites. Microsoft was no help and Acer only provides the drivers for Vista for this model.

If I compress digital photos, will it affect the print quality?

I have a program that will compress the files to a more storage friendly size, but I’m afraid it will take away from details when printed. That has made me hesitant on reducing their size but it is eating up so much room on my hard drive with the mass number of pictures I take. I guess I could save them to a CD, it justs more convenient to have them in the computer. Any suggestions?
