Computer does not start?

My PC has started to act weird..

P4
1.5GB Ram
7800gs nvidia card
ASRock m/b
250GB EXTERNAL HDD
80GB internal

So I was listening to some music from my external HD plugged in via USB and it started to skip, like a cyclic redundancy on a CD, I unplugged it, restarted the PC.. The PC took ages to come back on, but did..

I dismanteled my external HD to see what was up inside and was surprised to find an actual HDD.. So, I took it out of it’s case and wired it to the slave socket on the internal HD cable, set the jumpers accordingly.

It worked

I powered off the PC for the night and came back in the morning, nothing, no post screen, monitor stayed off… So I unhooked the slave HDD and tried again… nothing! - I played with the jumpers, and then it worked; comes back on, when i switch off again, nothing, no post screen… So i unplugged my internal HD, swapped it for my external which has Linux on one partition, and nothing, no post screen.. I switch the drives around again and it works but always fails to reboot when i switch it back on.

Right now the pc is in the state it’s always been in, i reinstalled XP, shorted the jumpers to reset cmos, even took the battery out for half an hour.. Nothing..

I can get it to boot if i turn it on, then off, switch HDD’s from primary to the external via the IDE cable, switch on, off again, switch HDD’s back and it’ll go on, but when I power it down it wont start..

Checked all cables, removed my graphics card to see if it was a power problem, but as before it’s always worked… *** is going on?

Help, Please!!!!

Creating a proxy on a linux server to be used with a browser?

Hi - I’m looking to use the IP of my dedicated linux server as the IP address for my browser. I’d simply like to change the proxy settings for the browser and be able to use the linux server as a proxy. What is the most simple way to configure the server appropriately to enable this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

plan on building my own PC. how much do you think it will cost?

i plan on having some sort of super gaming PC. here are the specs i want so far:
-3.0GHz Dual Core AMD processor
-4GB DDR2 RAM
-2x 500GB HDD
-3x IEEE 1394 ports
-6x high speed USB 2.0 ports
-2x 17″ LCD monitors (2500:1 contrast ratio)
-2x DVD/CD burning drives with Light Scribe

i haven’t decided on what kind of Video Card i want yet. some sort of Nvidia, but idk which. and i also want a really good sound card and wireless card. please give me some suggestion on those

So how much do you think it would cost to build all this?
I plan on it being a 64bit Window’s XP SP3 on one HDD, and Linux Mint 4.0 on the other HDD. this would be of course a Desktop, not a Laptop/Notebook.

Musix Linux, USB flash drive, and a Smile?

Here’s one for you Linux geeks out there (which, since I use Linux as well, I must be one too): How do you install Musix Linux on a USB flash drive? Is it as simple as going through the installer on Musix and just directing it at the USB drive, or will there be problems when it boots up? In case you need to know, Musix is a Debian-based OS (at least, now it is).

how do you use cd to change to another disk?

I am trying to program Ruby but since I want to use it on any computer, I saved it onto my usb drive. However, I don’t know how do run it from the command prompt, because my command to go up a directory only gets me to C:, then I cant go any farther. Please explain in Mac, Linux, and Windows versions.
Okay, but currently none of them work. I use cd H:\ and it doesn’t say anything bad, but it still shows C:> and I can’t get to any folders. Also, if I installed Ruby on the usb drive, would I still be able to run it on a computer without Ruby installed?
Wait… never mind!

How to cut and paste something in Linux, using the terminal?

How do I go about cutting something in one directory and placing it into another directory in the terminal?
What are the “commands” (not sure if that’s what they’re called) and what are their arguments? I would appreciate anyone with helpful information’s assistance.

Thank-you.
